Every new place I perform at gives me a sense of
nervous anticipation. Today made no difference.
Today's performance was at Washington Square Park,
one of the landmarks of NYC, Greenwich Village, and NYU.
With the symbolic white arch of Washington stoically standing,
and the central fountain gathering all the locals and tourists,
this park has been a hub for artists, writers, activists, the
hippie movement, movies, and of course, performances.
For all that said, I began my performance at the arch,
but in less than five minutes the park security came and I
was told to stop. I've gotten used to this happening by now,
so I peacefully got my things together, and was about to
relocate, when passersby started gathering in front of me.
In my moment of slight dejection, the encouraging words
and curious faces that asked about Worldmelody Project
helped turned the situation inside out.
Of particular note, one young man said to me,
"I believe you can change the world."
In his sincerity and genuine enthusiasm he was a source
of positive energy that sometimes, I forget I need.
After I said goodbye, I relocated to the park's fountain
(where fortunately park security didn't mind), and
continued with the performance. I realize today that
you can't undermine the impact of another's kindness.
Sometimes it's that kindness that turns an inner frown,
into an inner smile.
